Personal Branding – Part One: Hone In On Your Personal Brand

We are digging into part one of personal branding. If you are an entrepreneur or solopreneur, maybe you do social sales, and you’ve partnered with a brand. This idea of a personal brand may feel half and half overwhelming and unnecessary. What I’m here to tell you is whether you think you do or not, you have a personal brand. The question is, “Are you letting it happen by accident or are you building it on purpose?”

Here’s the fun thing about personal branding. We get to decide what’s important to us, how we want to serve others, and get out there and do that with a lot of intention. What I’m hoping in this episode that I can do is start to help you dig into the kinds of questions to ask yourself to start to hone in on your personal brand.

I have this cool methodology. Not everything that you think, believe, and do needs to be a part of your “personal brand.” What you want to do is overlap the things that connect you to your target audience, and target audience will be the next episode. Right now, we are going to start with you because I have said this before and I say it again, my friend, you are magnetic. You have so much value to add, and the key is you discovering that and then deciding to leveling up your identity, and showing up as your best self in the biggest most serve it hearted way.

Let’s dig in. If you have a pen, grab it. If not, you can hop back and read this. I have a workbook that I will eventually attach, but I’m not going to do it too soon because I don’t want to overwhelm. Let’s start with question number one, “How would you describe yourself?” I want you to dig into that. Without overthinking it, how would you describe yourself? I’m a mom of three. I’m a fitness professional. I grew up in Rhode Island and moved to New York City, and I’m a self-made gal. My husband and I are completely self-made people. I’m fun. I’m very goofy. I laugh at all my own jokes.

I dig into I am fully invested in personal growth being my best self. Very reflective. I’m type-A. I have ADD. Go into all of the things about yourself. Dig in. Let me know if any of those relate to you. Question number two, what are your favorite topics? Things you love to talk about. I always talk about this. My son is an expert on certain reality television shows. He’s an expert on survivor. The bright old age of eighteen, he knows more than I do and I have been around alive for all of the survivors.

What are the topics? What are the things that you get super passionate about? Marketing is something I can geek out on. Mindset. I love health tips and tricks. What are your favorite topics? What do people ask you for advice on? This is question number three. That is a very clarifying question. What are you good at? What comes easily to you? What are your superpowers?

For example, I’m good at Canva, and I’m sure if anyone’s reading, if you don’t use Canva, you got to get in there and start to dabble. I think Canva is going to take over the world, but I’m good at putting graphics together. I’m not a professional graphic designer, but I can get by and do some good things. It’s one of my skills. Spreadsheets, I mentioned this in the last episode. Not my skillset.

Next question is what are the things that matter most to you? This gets into your values and your priorities. Go ahead and write those down. What are those things that matter most to you? Kindness and acceptance matters to me. Room for everyone at the table matters to me. Those are the things. Dig into the things that matter to you. I believe in abundance. All of those things.

What are the things you are most proud of? You can obviously talk about your family. We are probably all so proud of raising humans because that’s a big job. What are your biggest accomplishments? I’m so proud I have run two marathons. I like to run but I’m more of a short-distance runner, not a long-distance runner. I’m proud of myself for doing that.

I want you to dig into this. If you don’t have enough to fill out here, I’m going to encourage you to start to level up the kinds of things that you are reading and listening to. The more you read, listen, and learn, the more you have to talk about. What do you read? What do you watch? What are your favorite hobbies? What do you do for fun? Who are your favorite authors? Favorite TV shows? What are your favorite podcasts that you listen to?

As I’m making this episode on Facebook, I asked people if they love the show, Ted Lasso, which is a phenomenal show. It was one of those questions that I thought, anybody who loves Ted Lasso is my person, and it was phenomenal to see how many people responded. What are the kinds of things that you are digging into?

The last question, and this is a harder one and I don’t want you to overthink it. All of these could change over time. The last one is, “What do you feel your purpose is?” I’m at a life stage in my life where two of my kids are off to college. I have got one in high school. If you had asked me several years ago, and I had three kids under the age of five, I would add a different answer to my purpose.

My purpose was to manage where I was in my life. Where now I’m thinking about can I give back to other people and teach what I have learned. Think about what your purpose is right now. Don’t think you need to have a life’s purpose right now because you don’t. Your life’s purpose is to learn as you go. That’s your life’s purpose.

I hope these are super helpful. Here’s what your homework is for this. You want to fill these out. Next time, we are going to start to dig into your dream avatar, and this part is going to be super important. This is about building a personal brand. Your personal brand is who you are as a person, and what is it about you as a person that people can connect with and build that know, like, and trust factor. It is going to define how you intentionally show up on social media.

This goes back to my story. There are so many people join network marketing businesses or start their own business, become a coach because they love what they do, and they haven’t had to market before. You go from someone who was on social media to someone who’s trying to authentically connect on social media.

The only way you can authentically connect with other people on social media is being super intentional and authentic with how you show up. This is the beginning of that process. Go ahead and have fun with this. I’d love to hear what you come back with. This is a process you can continue to refine. What I want you to do is after you fill it all out, I want you to see if you find 5 or 10 themes that start to stand out as you answer all those questions. There are probably some similar themes that get repeated through these questions.

Go ahead and let me know how that goes. I’m so excited to hear. Give me some feedback. Please, if you are enjoying what we are doing on here, go on and write a review. Let me know how things are going. I will be back with you folks next time to dig into the avatar, which is one of my favorite topics, so we are going to have a lot of fun with that as well. In the meantime, remember, you are magnetic and people are waiting to hear what you have to say. Go dig into your personal brand questions. I will be back with you the next time. Thanks for reading.
