The Science Behind Magnetic Mindsets
I’m so thrilled you’re here to talk with me about one of my favorite topics, which is the science behind magnetic mindsets. If you’re somebody who hears magnetic mindset and think, “That sounds like the Law of Attraction stuff. It’s a little woo-woo.” It is, and it’s also grounded in science. I’m hopeful that after reading this episode, you’ll get excited about the potential of training your brain and mind to create the life you want.
I’m going to give you my red car analogy. You may have heard this one before, so bear with me. If at the end of the day, I asked you how many red cars you saw, who knows? You may recall seeing 1 or 2, and you may not recall seeing any or you may not have noticed red cars. If I said to you I will give you $1,000 for every red car you see now, and I asked you at the end of the day how many red cars did you see, you would be able to tell me exactly how many red cars you see.
I’ve told your brain what to look for, and then your brain goes to work looking for exactly what you’ve told it to look for. That is what is called The Reticular Activating System. It’s called the RAS for short. The Reticular Activating System is a network of neurons that sits at the bottom of your brain stem, and it acts as a Google filter for your brain.
All of this stuff happens subconsciously, but it’s why if your child yells your name in a crowded room, you can hear it. It’s why we make sudden moves to protect ourselves. It’s all built in there. It’s also operating off of our beliefs and what we say out loud and to ourselves. Here’s the interesting thing about the subconscious brain. Our subconscious brain is working off of what we believe to be true. When you say to yourself, “I’ll give it a try, but I don’t know if it’s going to work,” our brain hears, “I don’t know if it’s going to work.” Our brain hears everything after the but.
If you say, “I’ll try to come but I don’t know if I can make it.” Our brain says, “I don’t know if I can make it.” That’s what happens inside our subconscious brain and so many things that we say and believe are counterproductive to what we actually want. The key to creating a more magnetic mind is to start to deliberately put things into our brain and subconscious that we want to focus on. When we do that, because we can only focus on so many things at any moment in time, our brain will start to clear the decks and hone in and focus on what we’ve told it we want.

I’ll give you a personal example, which still blows my mind. I was working in a traditional direct sales business before the one that I’m in right now. I had stumbled into that business. I was a health coach and a personal trainer. I found some products that I liked. I knew other people would like them. I wandered into that business. It was great. I loved it but I found myself stuck in the business and frustrated. I had a feeling that I had outgrown the opportunity and I didn’t know what to do next. It was in the middle of the pandemic. I was like, “I don’t know what to do.”
I can still remember it was a Thursday, and I really didn’t know much about the industry at all. I thought to myself, “Maybe I should look around to see what the other plans are. What are the business plans of some of these other businesses, just so I have an understanding of what’s out there and if there would be anything else that would make sense for me?” It was a Thursday, and on a Monday, I got a call from somebody that told me that one of my dear friends was leaving our company for a new, completely different upgraded model of the network marketing industry.
It literally felt like a download. Had I not been open to the idea of looking at something, I probably would have missed it completely. Because I had been open, all of a sudden, an opportunity opened up for me. I believe in this so deeply, and I really do believe that the conversations we have with ourselves are the most important conversations and they are the hardest ones to change.
That’s why doing work of deliberate creation, deciding what your word of the year is, deciding what you want, and putting that in a place where you can find it is so important to you creating the life you desire. I will say this over and over again. Your life either happens by default or by design. Here’s the scarier thing. By default, unless we do the work, is a default of all of the things that didn’t go right, prevents us from taking risks, worries about what everyone else thinks, and keeps us scared and small. That’s the default.
Default is scary and small. If you want to change your life, you’ve got to change the way you think, the stuff that is going on inside your head, and the script that’s happening inside your brain. That is the story. I know I’m getting all fired up on this. I’m going to give you a couple of ways that you can easily do this and then I’m going to give you some tips, tricks, and tools.
I have, next to my desk, the words ‘HAVE FUN’ on a piece of paper because I want to make sure a core value of mine is that I enjoy my life. I am too blessed to not be having more fun. I deliberately make sure that I’m having fun. If I’m not having fun, I know I have to either stop doing whatever that is or reframe it so that I can find the fun.
Number one is you can put words, thoughts, and ideas down on paper. Like old school, put them around places. Put it on a Post-it pad, the mirror in your bathroom, or next to the refrigerator. If you want to eat healthier, put it next to the refrigerator or next to things in places where you would naturally see them multiple times a day.
The more times you can remind yourself, the better. Number one is old-school Post-it notes. Number two, one of my favorite ones is you can make an image and put it on the unlock screen on your phone. You can put the words on your screen so every time you open your phone, you see it. That is a no-brainer. How many times do we open our phones during the day? You can make it your screensaver on your laptop. You can use technology. You can also set reminders.
I do this. I have an appreciation reminder that goes off a couple of times a day, and when it goes off, I stop and think of something I’m grateful for. I’ll often send out a note to someone telling them I appreciate them. You can do reminders on the phone. Let me run through those. Old-school paper, Post-it notes, and unlock screen reminders.
The fourth one is a vision board. The number one reason to do the vision board is to train your brain. It’s science. You are putting words and images together on a piece of paper. Your brain takes all of that in and goes to work to make it happen for you. A vision board is a really good exercise. I am going to do a vision board and prompt training on my next episode, and I’ll give you some guides on how to do it so easily now that we have Canva. It’s a game-changer because if anyone who’s reading did a vision board old-school, it was harder. You had to go through magazines and pull stuff out and it was close enough, or not exactly.
