Why Choose a Word of the Year?

Are you thinking about choosing a Word Of The Year? This is one of my favorite end-of-year manifestation exercises because it refocuses my energy to attract what I desire into my life.

Once you realize that our brains are computers, and our operating system is built on past experiences that have shaped our beliefs. Those beliefs create stories, and those stories create the filters through which we see life.

Once you embrace this concept, you can begin the real work, which is 1) becoming aware of your current thoughts and beliefs, 2) letting go of old limiting beliefs and 3) refocusing on what you really desire. This is my hope for you: that this is the year you’ll rewrite your stories so you can take control of your thoughts and use them to create the life you desire.

When you choose a word for the year and embrace it fully, your subconscious brain will look for ways to make your desires come true.

Last year, my word was renewal. I had just sold my nutrition business, and I was feeling burnt out. I needed to slow down and rest, but old programming kept creeping in. My inner monologue would say things like “You didn’t do enough today” and “What are you going to do with your life now?” Can you relate? This feeling of “not-enoughness”?

And then I’d remember: Renewal is what I’m doing with my life right now.

The Science Behind Your Word

This isn’t just “woo woo” – there’s a bundle of nerves at the base of your brainstem called the reticular activating system (RAS). It acts like a Google search function for your brain, filtering out what is important and what isn’t.

How does your RAS know what is important? You tell it by the thoughts you keep thinking. The problem is, most of us aren’t even aware of what we are repeatedly thinking. It’s estimated that we have somewhere around 80,000 thoughts a day and most of those thoughts are 1) repeated and 2) negative. This is why meditation and reprogramming our subconscious minds matters. We can stop repeating the same negative thoughts that have been swirling around our your heads. We can refocus on what we really want instead of what we’ve been programmed to believe.

This, my friend, is manifesting.

Streamlined Word of the Year Workshop

I love this work so much that I host a full 2-part visioning masterclass each year for my community. You can download the entire series, including a full visioning workbook, for free by clicking here.

In the meantime, here’s a streamlined Word Of The Year Workshop for you:

Step 1: Prepare Your Space and Mind
  • Grab a notebook and pen.
  • Clear out your space and clear your mind by doing some box breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4).

Let your pen (or keyboard) free flow as best as you can. Don’t overthink. Try to use words or short phrases instead of long, detailed thoughts.

Step 2: Word of the Year Journaling Prompts
  • How do I want to feel when I wake up?
  • How do I want to show up, for myself and others?
  • What do I want more of in my life?
  • What do I want less of in my life?
  • Imagine yourself a year from now…
    • Where do you want to be?
    • What do you want to be doing?
    • Who do you want to be spending time with?
Step 3: Refine Your Word

Take your time with these questions. When you’re done:

  1. Go through and underline or circle the words and phrases that resonate most with you. I’ve created a master list in the visioning workbook or click here to grab it on Pinterest
  2. This is important. Let these words sit in your subconscious for 24 hours. Sleep on it. Let the questions and your answers marinate in your brain.
  3. When you’re ready, revisit your journaling and create a top 10 list of words or phrases.
  4. From this top 10 list, pick your favorite. This is your Word of the Year!

How to Use Your Word of the Year

  • Use it as the centerpiece for your vision board.
  • Set it as the password for your phone.
  • Get a bracelet engraved with your word.
  • Set reminders on your phone to reinforce it daily.

Let’s Transform Your Year

I cannot underscore how this simple practice can transform your life. I’d love to hear from you—let me know your Word of the Year so I can hold your dreams in our collective energy. Because we all deserve what we desire.

As always, I’m cheering you on.

Love,
Tracey
